Washington - US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's charitable foundation donated to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi's political campaign to prevent an investigation into his own fraudulent activities, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's campaign said in an ad released on Tuesday.

“[Trump's] foundation has been fined for an illegal donation,” the ad stated. “He sent Florida AG Pam Bondi thousands from his foundation, just as she was considering an investigation into his sham university.”

The ad, which Clinton posted on her official Twitter account, opens with the candidate expressing her approval for its message.

On Tuesday, Democrats in the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee asked the US Department of Justice to investigate the $25,000 payment.

The House members wrote that the 2013 payment may have influenced Bondi's decision not to have Florida participate in a lawsuit filed by several US states against the now-defunct Trump University.

Trump has already paid a $2,500 fine to the US Internal Revenue Service and refunded his foundation for the amount of the donation because US law prohibits charities from contributing to political organizations.
