The second tropical cyclone of the southern hemisphere summer in the Pacific hit the Solomon Islands Saturday.
Cyclone Freda brought strong winds and rain flattening trees and lifting roofs, according to reports from the capital Honiara quoted by Radio New Zealand.
It quoted forecaster Manoah Tepa of Solomon Islands Meteorological Service as saying the main island Makira had been hardest hit with rising rivers flooding some areas.
He said the storm was expected to affect the country until early Monday, when it is forecast to move on to the French territory of New Caledonia. -Sapa-dpa
