Washington - Former NBA star Dennis Rodman was charged on Monday with hit and run and other crimes, after driving the wrong way on a US freeway, a statement from prosecutors said.

The charges stemmed from an incident on July 20, where Rodman drove the wrong way along Interstate 5, near Santa Ana in California, a statement from Orange County's District Attorney office said.

The 55-year-old was accused of driving head-on towards another car, causing the driver to swerve and crash into a dividing wall, the statement said.

Rodman allegedly fled the scene and did not exchange information with the other driver.

He was also accused of giving false information to a police officer and driving without a valid license.

If convicted, Rodman could face a maximum sentence of two years in jail, the statement said.

AP reports that Rodman's attorney, Paul Meyer, says the incident occurred on a poorly signed exit ramp. He says Rodman corrected the driving error without the cars touching, stopped and spoke to people in the other car.

Rodman, who won five NBA championships as a player, rose to international prominence again in 2013 after he conducted a number of visits to North Korea and subsequently befriended the country's leader Kim Jong Un.
