Madrid - In one of Spain's most disturbing criminal cases in years, a 16-year-old youngster killed his family with a ceremonial Samurai sword because "I wanted to experience something new and different," the boy said according to press reports on Thursday.

Police are trying to clarify the motives of Jose Rabadan, an apparently friendly and quiet son of a truck driver, who attacked his parents and 9-year-old sister when they were asleep in the family home in Murcia Saturday night.

Rabadan slaughtered his father with 17 strokes of his Samurai sword, and then proceeded to kill his terrified mother and sister. He changed into clean clothes, took some money and "left home forever".

Rabadan killed his family because he "wanted to be alone" and did not want his parents to trace him, he explained to police with an eerie calm.

The boy practised oriental martial arts and was fond of violent video games. Neighbours described him as spoilt and solitary, and psychiatrists said that he was likely to suffer from a latent psychosis. - Sapa-DPA
