Around 200 people were on Friday arrested in the Iraqi city of Karbala, where protesters were calling for more employment opportunities and better public services. Journalists and photographers were among those detained, after security confiscated their cameras. Clashes had erupted earlier in the city, 90 kilometres south of the capital Baghdad, when security tried to disperse protesters who were trying to break into a government building and throwing rocks at it.

In two northern Iraqi cities, security forces trying to push back crowds opened fire, killing six demonstrators. In the capital of Baghdad, demonstrators knocked down blast walls, threw rocks and scuffled with club-wielding troops.
