President Lee Myung-bak has met with Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi before visiting the site where North Korean commandos staged a bloody 1983 attack against visiting South Korean dignitaries.

Security was extremely tight on Tuesday as Lee visited Yangon. He is the first South Korean leader to visit Myanmar since the bombing aimed at assassinating then-President Chun Doo-hwan.

Truckloads of armed police closed roads and traffic was jammed in the city.

After meeting Suu Kyi, Lee was due to visit the blast site known as Martyr's Mausoleum, a monument to Suu Kyi's father General Aung San, the country's independence hero.

The attack left 21 dead, 17 of them South Korean. Chun arrived late and was not harmed. - Sapa-AP
