Lampedusa -

A baby born as its mother drowned is the latest victim of the boat tragedy that has claimed the lives of more than 300 migrants near Sicily.

Their fishing boat caught fire and sank last Thursday half a mile from the island of Lampedusa.

The Eritrean woman, who was seven months pregnant, would have given birth as she died, the mayor of Lampedusa, Giusi Nicolini, said.

The premature baby boy was still attached by the umbilical cord when their bodies were pulled from the wreck. Police diver Renato Sollustri said: “The baby may never have seen light, only the darkness at the bottom of the sea. It was a horrible job.”

He said he had not slept since he had brought up the two bodies from the boat. Mother and child will be buried in the same coffin. -Daily Mail
