Brussels - More than 130 vehicles were involved in road pile-ups in Belgium on Tuesday in which one person was killed, local media reported. The morning accidents on the A19 highway near the western town of Zonnebeke are believed to have been caused by heavy fog, authorities told the Belga news agency. The highway was still closed in both directions by the afternoon, with firefighters working to free people from their vehicles. By midday, five people were reported to have life-threatening injuries, while eight were seriously injured and 54 sustained lighter injuries, according to Belga. It reported that some 400 first aid workers responded to the emergency, with a Red Cross field hospital installed at the site. Belgium's most deadly accident, in 1996, was also caused by fog, when a highway collision involving 200 vehicles left 10 people dead, Belga said.
