London -

A British man charged with kidnapping of two Western journalists in Syria is due for a preliminary appearance in court on Wednesday.

Shajul Islam was arrested last week on suspicion of terror offenses after arriving in London on a flight from Egypt. A 26-year-old British woman who travelled with him was released without charge.

Islam is accused of working with others to “unlawfully and injuriously imprison” two photographers, Briton John Cantlie and his Dutch colleague Jeroen Oerlemans, between July 17 and July 26 in Syria. He was held in custody pending an appearance in Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Oerlemans was shot twice during a failed attempt to escape from his captors.

Cantlie, who had worked for the Sunday Times newspaper, said that none of his captors were Syrians. - Sapa-AP
