Baghdad, Iraq - Twin car bombs in Baghdad killed 12 people and wounded at least another 27 on Tuesday, Iraqi security and medical officials said.

An interior ministry official said that the twin blasts in the Karrada area of central Baghdad killed 12 people and wounded 27.

A medical official said that the first car bomb killed five people and wounded 15, while a second a few minutes later killed seven and wounded 20.

The latest violence comes after Iraq suffered a spike in unrest in June, when at least 282 people were killed, according to an AFP tally based on figures from officials.

Violence in Iraq has declined sharply from its peak in 2006 and 2007, but attacks remain common. - Sapa-AFP
