Denpasar, Indonesia - An Indonesian court on Wednesday sentenced a Danish woman to five years in prison for smuggling 218 grams of hashish into the resort island of Bali.

Tine Rasmussen, 37, was arrested in March with the drug hidden in capsules as she arrived at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport, along with her French partner who picked her up.

“The defendant's crime can tarnish Bali as a tourism destination,” chief judge Amzer Simajuntak said as he delivered the verdict.

Ramussen's French boyfriend, identified as Cedric Laval, is expected to stand trial soon.

Police said Rasmussen had been a courier for an international drug ring operating in Bali.

Indonesian courts impose heavy sentences, including death, for drug offences as the country battles growing drug abuse among youths.

Around half of an estimated 100 people on death row in Indonesia are foreigners mostly convicted of drug trafficking, human rights groups said. - Sapa-dpa
