EVERYDAY the South African government continues to use fossil fuel as the main source of energy and the more they do, the more they dig graves of the country's next generation.

So demonstrated the coalition of environmental groups who protested outside the Department of Energy in Pretoria this morning.

The coalition made up of Greenpeace Africa, African Climate Reality Project, Earthlife and 350 Africa.org launched project the Break Free 2017 to run from March 13 until March 31.

Nhlanhla Sibisi climate and energy campaigner for Greenpeace Africa said it was important for the government to seriously look into giving renewable energy a chance.

"We can't use the excuse of renewable energy being too expensive because technology has advanced so much now."

"We have solar power and wind energy options why not use them. Coal will down the line impact millions of South Africans," he said.
