South Africa’s most ambitious urban development is taking form at the Waterfall Business Estate in Gauteng.

Unifying northern Sandton and Midrand, Waterfall is a huge 330-hectare mixed-use development by Atterbury Property Group.

Waterfall spans the N1 highway, from Woodmead Interchange through the bustling Buccleuch Interchange to the Allandale Interchange. It joins Modderfontein in the east, and reaches beyond Kyalami in the west. It has superb access from Pretoria, Sandton and Joburg.

Atterbury is developing the 1.6 million square metre mixed-use commercial component of Waterfall Business Estate. It is creating a central business district, Waterfall City, as part of this.

Waterfall City is much more than just a mixed-use precinct, says Atterbury developments director Coenie Bezuidenhout.

“It is the largest urban concept development in SA, spanning 140ha and comprising 800 000m² of retail, offices and homes,” he says.

“It’s centred on a 115 000m² shopping precinct combined with offices and apartments.

“Waterfall City is of a significantly greater scale than anything SA knows. Besides having the critical mass of a vibrant, active 24-hour city, it is a place where people can live happily and healthily, and work and profit from all the facilities they need.”

Luke Chandler, director of Bentel Associates International, says Waterfall City will be an integrated sustainable urban environment. Buildings and streets will be interwoven with green spaces.
