Cape Town - Whale-watching in False Bay, Cape Town, is always exciting, but when a once-in-five-years’ sighting is added to the mix, it’s a real thrill.
That was the situation that marine biologist Kari Underhill found herself in last week when the sight of a Bryde’s whale breaching had her as excited as her clients. Being able to photograph the event was the cherry on top.
Bryde’s whales are found on our coast year round but it’s extremely rare to see them breach, let alone get pictures of them doing it, said Underhill, who works for whale-watch boat operator Dave Hurwitz.
“This was only my first time in five years of being on the water to witness this. It’s a very rare sighting,” she said.
They were whale-watching about three nautical miles off Seal Island.
Bryde’s whales are much smaller than southern right whales.
