London - Elvis Presley’s premature death is often blamed on an unhealthy diet and prescription drugs.

But scientists suggested the star may have had an undetected heart muscle disease which is inherited – and that his death at 42 was “genetic destiny”.

DNA analysis of hair thought to be Presley’s kept by a friend of his barber showed he may have had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Symptoms include irregular heartbeat, fatigue and high blood pressure – all suffered by Presley before his death in 1977.

The research is revealed in Britain’s Channel 4’s DNA Dead Famous.

Host Mark Evans said the evidence “suggests Elvis may have had a flaw in his DNA and his early death was his genetic destiny”. - Daily Mail
