London - A Beyonce video featuring audio from the failed 1986 Challenger mission that resulted in the death of all seven crew has angered Nasa astronauts.

The singer’s new video for her song XO features a recording made just after the space shuttle exploded on January 28, 1986, 73 seconds after taking off from Kennedy Space Centre.

“Flight controllers here looking very carefully at the situation. Obviously a major malfunction,” a Nasa official said as the craft fell to earth on live TV.

Keith Cowing, a former Nasa employee who runs the website NASAWatch.com, said Beyonce should apologise, adding: “This is inappropriate in the extreme.”

June Scobee Rodgers, widow of shuttle commander Dick Scobee, said: “The moment included in this song is an emotionally difficult one for Challenger families, colleagues and friends.”

But in a statement on Monday, Beyonce, 32, said the clip was included “in tribute to the unselfish work of the Challenger crew with hope that they will never be forgotten”. - Daily Mail
