London - Facebook can be “self-soothing”, easing depression, says a study.

Dr Alice Good, of the University of Portsmouth, found that 90 percent of users of the social networking site look at their wall posts and 75 percent at their photos when they are feeling low.

“The results indicate we could use self-soothing as a form of treatment for low moods,” she said.

Psychologist Dr Clare Wilson, of the University of Portsmouth, said: “When in the grip of a negative mood, it is too easy to forget how good we often feel. Our positive posts can remind us of this.”

This study of 144 Facebook users is published in the journal Lecture Notes in Computer Science. - Daily Mail
