‘WhatsApp, “Rugby World Cup” and “Royal Wedding” top the list of fastest rising Google searches in South Africa for 2011

The internet search company has released its annual “Zeitgeist”, a look at 2011 through the collective eyes of the world – and South Africa – on the web.

After WhatsApp, a cellphone messaging app, the rugby World Cup and the Royal Wedding came Facebook and the late Amy Winehouse as the terms most searched in South Africa.

Top newsmaker was Julius Malema, recently suspended President of the ANC Youth League. “From marches to landmark speeches, a hospital trip and a hate speech ruling, he appeared in many South African and international headlines in 2011,” said Google in a statement.

The top celebrity was reality TV star Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga’s controversial track, “Judas”, was the top song lyric search.

The most popular questions South Africans were asking include “What is Facebook?” and “What is love?
