Johannesburg - On its 10th birthday, Facebook is turning the tables on its users by giving them a gift – a personalised video showing highlights of their online life.

Inviting users to “look back”, the minute-long videos show details of when you joined, your first moments, your top posts and photos you shared.

Facebook started out as Thefacebook on February 4, 2004. Student Mark Zuckerberg and a number of friends started the social network as a way to keep track of classmates, and membership was initially limited to Harvard students.

Within its first year, Facebook had reached 1 million users.

“It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. It’s been amazing to see how people have used Facebook to build a real community and help each other in so many ways,” Zuckerberg said in a statement to mark the anniversary.

“In the next decade, we have the opportunity and responsibility to connect everyone and to keep serving the community as best we can,” he said.

According to Facebook, there were 945 million monthly active users who used Facebook on their cellphones or tablets as of December 31 last year.

There were 757 million daily active users on average in December and 1.23 billion monthly active users as of December 31.

About 81 percent of its daily active users were outside the US and Canada.

In South Africa, there were 9.4 million active users, up from 6.8 million users a year ago, according to the South African Social Media Landscape 2014 research study, released by World Wide Worx and Fuseware. - The Star
