London - Using Facebook can make you unhappy with your lot, according to researchers.

They found that the cheerful pictures Facebook users plaster over their pages convey a debilitating message to those who see them.

More than 400 students were asked by a team at Utah Valley University how much they agreed or disagreed with statements such as “Life is fair” and “Many of my friends have a better life than me”.

The results showed that the more time they spent on Facebook, the more likely they were to think other people were happier than them.

Those who had used Facebook the longest were significantly more likely to believe life is unfair.

The study, published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behaviour and Social Networking, found that people who spent more time socialising with friends in the flesh were less likely to feel unhappy with their lives. - Daily Mail
