In 2013, South Africa occupied 70th place in the WEF rankings of 144 countries, according to their ability to benefit from the digital era.
After successfully providing free wi-fi to residents and students in the Stellenbosch city centre, the municipality has started rolling out its “internet connectivity project” in Cloetesville, Idas Valley and Kayamandi.
In addition, head of the Stellenbosch municipality’s finance portfolio, Pieter Venter, has indicated that farms are next.
Venter said 48 schools in the greater Stellenbosch area would also be connected to the wi-fi grid.
“By the end of the year, the entire Stellenbosch will have free wi-fi.”
The town, the first in SA to roll out free wi-fi, wants to position itself as the “Silicon Valley of Africa” and providing free wi-fi is the first step.
The initiative is a joint operation between the town, Stellenbosch University and Mxit. - Cape Argus
