Cape Town - Just two months ago, he was crossing the finish line of the Cape Town Marathon as the 2013 champion. But Lindikaya Mthangayi could be stripped of his title and banned from the sport after the Western Cape runner tested positive for a banned steroid.

The result was part of an in-competition test conducted by the SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport on the day of the marathon, September 22.

This is not the first time the athlete has tested positive for a banned substance. In 2009, he was banned from the sport for six months after a test revealed he had the stimulant methylhexaneamine in his blood.

Institute chief executive Khalid Galant said Mthangayi, who could be facing a ban of up to six years, still had the option of requesting his B-sample to be analysed to confirm or contest the first sample’s result.
