Cape Town - Having dismissed New Zealand for 45 in the morning, South Africa went into lunch on day one of first Test on 3/1 after facing just two overs at Newlands on Wednesday.

Graeme Smith shuffled across his crease to a Doug Bracewell delivery which swung back at him, hitting him plumb after he had scored one run.

A five-wicket haul from Vernon Philander and wickets from Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel made short, sharp work of New Zealand as they were all out for 45 in exactly 100 minutes after winning the toss and selecting to bat.

It was the 12th lowest innings total of all time and the lowest score since 1974.

Dale Steyn became the fourth South African to take 300 Test wickets when he removed Doug Bracewell’s middle stump and also took a caught-and-bowled to dismiss Daniel Flynn at the end of the innings.

Philander took his eighth five-wicket haul in only his 13th Test, returning outstanding figures of 5/7 while Morne Morkel bagged 3/14 and Steyn 2/18. - Sapa
