Johannesburg – Star Proteas batsman AB de Villiers made a successful return from an elbow injury as he blasted 134 unbeaten for Northerns against Easterns in their CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge in Benoni on Sunday.

De Villiers, batting at No 3, faced just 103 balls as he clubbed 19 fours and three sixes to help Northerns chase down a victory target of 200 with just two wickets down.

De Villiers hit the headlines earlier this week when he announced his unavailability for the SA Test side, including a tour to England in July. The 32-year-old will be available for the third T20 International against Sri Lanka at Newlands on Wednesday.

Just over a year ago, reports surfaced that De Villiers would like to manage his workload in Test cricket, which he later confirmed to be true.

The Proteas ODI captain, however, did not take any time off as those comments would suggest.

An elbow injury late last year, though, forced De Villiers to sit out the home Test series win over New Zealand and Sri Lanka, and also the away Test series victory over Australia in November.

De Villiers has already handed over the Test captaincy to Faf du Plessis, and the 32-year-old’s latest comment suggest a focus on the shorter formats of the game.
