Jason Gillespie has confirmed he had a ‘good chat’ with the ECB’s director of cricket Andrew Strauss about the vacant coaching job amid rumours he could be named as Peter Moores’ successor by Tuesday.
‘I’ve spoken to Andrew and the ECB about the vacant position,’ he told Sky Sports News. ‘They made it very clear they’re chatting to a number of people of interest, so they’ll let us know what the process is in due course. At this stage there’s nothing more to say.
‘It was face-to-face (with Strauss), and we had a good chat and we’ll see what pans out from there.’
It is understood Gillespie has had two meetings with Strauss, and could now be unveiled in plenty of time for the one-day series against New Zealand, starting at Edgbaston on June 9.
His first job could be to work on England’s fielding after Alastair Cook’s side squandered vital chances on the second day of the Lord’s Test against New Zealand.
‘We didn’t field very well,’ said Moeen Ali, who claimed one of the two New Zealand wickets to fall.
‘It would have been a different game but for Mark Wood’s wicket with the no-ball and the dropped catch.
‘We are a bit disappointed, but we are looking forward to the new ball. It’s very important to strike with that, because the pitch is going to be flat.’ – Daily Mail
