Online entries for the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour – the world’s largest timed cycle event – opens today.

Entrants keen to take part in the race, which takes place on March 6, can apply online from 1pm, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust said yesterday.

International and local cyclists can enter on September 28 at 1pm.

The Cycle Tour is limited to 35 000 entries, with organisers reminding riders that applications “amount to an indication of interest only and do not ensure entry”.

“This is the first time the Cycle Tour has moved away from the first-come-first-serve entry mechanism, and we believe this new system will ensure a more equitable and inclusive process for all prospective riders,” the trust’s director, David Bellairs, said.

Another new change is that the corporate group category is no longer available, meaning all entrants would have to follow the public entry application process.

A certain number of entries would, however, be made available through charities.

Applicants would be notified via e-mail in the first week of next month whether their applications were successful.

Successful applicants would then have until October 26 to secure their places in the race by paying the R470 entry fee.

Interested riders could apply to enter the event at www.capetowncycletour.com – ANA
