Johannesburg - Fans of former Manchester United and England football player David Beckham will be pleased to know that he will be in the country next week.

Discovery announced yesterday that Beckham would be among the speakers at its Discovery Leadership Summit in Sandton on Monday.

A long-standing UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) ambassador, he has created the David Beckham Unicef Fund, which represents his commitment over the next decade to helping the world’s most vulnerable children.

“I’m pleased to be attending. It’s always great returning to South Africa, where I have always felt the warmth and passionate spirit of its people,” he said.

The summit is a flag-ship, global thought-leadership event that enables the sharing of intellectual capital to contribute to leadership in business, the government and civil society.

This year, the summit’s theme is Inspiring Minds, and the one-day event includes international speakers and panel discussions.

Speakers will include former General Electric chief executive Jack Welch, Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, Harvard historian and economist Niall Ferguson, Financial Times columnist and author Simon Kuper, and Discovery founder and chief executive Adrian Gore.

Beckham played football professionally for more than 20 years and has since evolved into a successful entrepreneur, working with many of the world’s top companies and modelling for well-known brands.
