DURBAN – Months of speculation over whether Durban will eventually host the 2022 Commonwealth Games will end this afternoon.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will release a press statement on Monday afternoon confirming that Durban will not host the sporting spectacle in 2022.

That decision was confirmed when the CGF’s full council met over the weekend. IOL was able to establish the outcome via a well placed source.

Durban’s chances of remaining as host was placed in doubt when government failed to put up the necessary financial guarantees to ensure the city held onto the hosting right, which was officially announced in September 2015.

R20 billion was the expected profit from the event. The CGF is yet to settle on replacement for Durban.
