Olivier finishes second in Glasgow

Johannesburg – South Africa's elite middle-distance athletes proved their potential ahead of the Commonwealth Games with a sterling showing at the Diamond League meeting in Glasgow on Saturday.

Andre Olivier secured his best ever finish at a Diamond League event, securing second place as the rest of the field succumbed to the dominance of David Rudisha.

The Kenyan world record holder, continuing his comeback from a lengthy injury hiatus, broke clear after the pace setter dropped off with 300m to go and secured a convincing victory in 1:43.34.

Olivier was the best of the rest, winning a sprint finish for second place in 1:45.65, less than two weeks before the start of the Commonwealth showpiece.

Johan Cronje grabbed fourth position in a tactical men's 1 500m contest in 3:34.97.

Running a well-judged race, Cronje worked hard down the home straight to cross the line more than two seconds behind runaway Kenyan Silas Kiplagat, who won in 3:32.84. – Sapa
