Johannesburg – Simon Magakwe, the first South African to break the sub-10-second barrier in the 100 metres, has been banned for two years for refusing to submit a sample to doping officials.

Several months ago, Magakwe refused to give a urine sample when approached by testers in an an out-of-competition test.

Athletics SA has confirmed to The Citizen newspaper that Magakwe’s ban will run until 22 Dec 2016 and that makes ineligible to compete at next year’s Rio Olympics.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the global body of athletics, treat the refusal to submit a sample as a doping offence. – ANA
