Johannesburg - The North West University (NWU) has offered a R360 000 sponsorship to help swimmers who would have had to pay out of their own pockets to attend the World Short Course Championships in Istanbul, Beeld reported on Saturday.

This amounts to a sponsorship of R14,400 for each swimmer.

Earlier this week, Swimming SA (SSA) president Jace Naidoo confirmed the 25 member team selected for the championships would have to fork out between R7000 and R8000 each to be able to participate in the event in December.

This was after Telkom pulled out at the end of last year as SSA's sponsor.

NWU rector Herman van Schalkwyk told Beeld he was “very sad” when he read that story because SA swimmers had made the country “very proud” during the Olympics. - Sapa
