Johannesburg - Lions captain Jaco Kriel paid tribute to his team after they beat Western Province 32-24 in the Currie Cup final at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The Lions achieved the rare feat of a perfect season with 12 out of 12 wins as they stormed home to lift the title they last won in 2011.

“I want to thank our wonderful supporters. My team - there's no team that's go character like you guys,” said Kriel.

“You guys are my brothers, you guys are my family. There's no better management than at the Lions, I love you guys. I just want to thank the Lord, he pulled us through this season.”

The Lions outgunned the visitors with four tries to three, and ultimately Province could not pull off the surprise victory. Province captain Juan de Jongh also paid tribute to the faultless record of the Lions throughout the season.

“To Jaco and his boys, well done on a great, perfect season,” said De Jongh. “We tried it in 2013. It's awesome for you guys, whatever you're building now it's working for you. Credit to the Lions, they deserved it.”

Despite playing away from home, there was a decent turnout of Province supporters.

“To my boys, it's been a tough season but our goal was to be here playing in the final. It's very important that we go back and rectify our mistakes for next year. “To the Western Province support that came out today and the Newlands faithful - we really appreciate it. Next year hopefully we can get a different result.” - ANA
