Cape Town – Springbok Patrick Lambie suffered a head injury in a freak accident at training in Cape Town on Tuesday afternoon.

Soon after Springbok training group had completed their warm-up exercises, the players were doing drills when the medical staff were called on to the training field at Cape Town stadium, in Green Point, to attend to Lambie.

He had taken a knock to the forehead and he suffered a gash which required hospital treatment.

He was taken to hospital and by the time the training session had ended two hours later, the Boks were still waiting for news on his condition.

Springbok assistant coach Johan van Graan said the extent of the injury will only be known on Wednesday, but he said the gash, just above the eyes, looked like it would require stitches.

“Just after the players had done the warm-up, there was a low-key contract drill and that’s where he was injured,” said Van Graan at the post-training presser.

“I think he got an elbow or another guy’s head on his head. We’ll know a bit more tomorrow.

“I don’t know how deep or how big the cut is but depending on that I guess our doctor will make a call (about when he can return to training).”

It was only two days ago that the Boks’ medical staff had given Lambie the green light to start training again. He had picked a neck injury in April and has been out of action since.

Lambie, who is in the Bok training group as a flyhalf-cum-fullback, was not expected to make the match-day squad for Saturday’s clash against the World XV at Newlands on Wednesday.

The Springboks will name their team on Wednesday.
