Marseille – Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes says that Bastian Schweinsteiger's participation in Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Marseille is in doubt despite his presence in the squad.

The Germany midfielder has been dogged by an ankle injury in recent weeks and has not played since making an appearance as a late substitute in Bayern's 7-0 thrashing of FC Basel in the last 16 on March 13.

“We'll test him today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) and we'll see if we can involve him,” said Heynckes during Tuesday's pre-game press conference.

“In recent weeks, he's mainly suffered from little physical niggles.”

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said Schweinsteiger's presence in the 20-man squad would be a fillip for his team-mates ahead of Wednesday's game at Stade Velodrome.

“It's nice that he's been able to make the trip,” said Rummenigge.

“We need him to obtain our objectives.”

Schweinsteiger, 27, has made only two substitute appearances for Bayern since injuring his right ankle on February 8.
