Arsenal remain confident they can lure Wayne Rooney from Manchester United despite the club’s official line that the player is not for sale.

With Chelsea also poised to make an inquiry about the England striker, having judged Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani too expensive, Rooney will be the subject of £20million bids from both clubs.

But United will be extremely reluctant to sell to title rivals Chelsea and will have reservations about strengthening Arsenal, who are on the verge of signing Gonzalo Higuaín from Real Madrid.

Rooney and new United manager David Moyes have spoken about his future: the pair met at Rooney’s home even before the players came back for training last week. Although Moyes has insisted that United do not want to sell the player, he declined to state whether Rooney wants to stay at Old Trafford when asked on Friday. – Mail On Sunday
