Andy Carroll is proving to be a good buy for West Ham United and is the man to derail the title challenge of his former club Liverpool, according to team-mate Winston Reid.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will see his team face the striker today after deeming the 25-year-old surplus to requirements.

Rodgers initially shipped out the former Newcastle United man on a season-long loan to Upton Park, with West Ham opting to make the deal permanent for £15million at the end of last season.

Carroll failed to justify his £35m price tag during two-and-a-half years on Merseyside but could dent Liverpool’s pursuit of a first Premier League crown — and convince Roy Hodgson that he should be in his World Cup squad.

Having spent much of the season on the sidelines through injury, he has helped to steer the Hammers from relegation danger and defender Reid has backed the England striker to trouble his old team-mates.

‘He could make the difference against Liverpool,’ said Reid. ‘He’s our main striker and has done well for the team since he came back. For him, it will be nice to play against his old team, the one he came from to us. Hopefully he can get a couple of goals and we can win the game.’ – Mail On Sunday
