Newcastle sacked John Carver as head coach, with Steve McClaren set to take over.

Head coach Carver and first-team coach Steve Stone left the club after a disastrous second half to the season in which they avoided relegation on the final day.

Owner Mike Ashley will pay around £1.5million in severance payments to the pair.

Former Blackpool boss and Newcastle midfielder Lee Clark is in the running to come in as assistant to McClaren, who will finalise his move to Tyneside in the next 24 hours after a holiday in Crete.

Fitness coach and psychology guru Steve Black — who worked closely with Jonny Wilkinson — is also in line for a role. He worked in a freelance capacity for McClaren at Derby County. McClaren could also return to his old club for coach Paul Simpson and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele, although both remain under contract at the iPro Stadium. – Daily Mail
