Suarez boost for RodgersComment on this story
Luis Saurez is targeting the Champions League with Liverpool after he signed a contract extension to end speculation over his future.
The Uruguay striker had four years left on the £80,000-a-week deal he agreed when joining from Ajax in January 2011 and is now in line with the club’s highest earners.
Suarez had been a target for Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain so his commitment to Anfield is a huge fillip for new manager Brendan Rodgers and the forward is determined to lead Liverpool’s assault on the top four.
“Every year Liverpool have been looking at the Champions League and we will be hoping for the best position,” said Suarez. “The new contract is unbelievable for me. I am so happy here with the club and in the city.
“I hope to play for many years here. This is a great team and everyone around the world knows Liverpool.
“I spoke with the manager last week and he was fantastic. He wants to play with the ball all the time and that is very important. He is a good manager and I was impressed with the work he did with Swansea last season.”
Rodgers, who could pitch Suarez into action against FC Gomel on Thursday night in the Europa League following his return from Olympic duty, said: “It was big for me coming into the club to keep Suarez. We are not in the Champions League but he was able to see the vision of what we are trying to do.” [email protected] – Daily Mail
