POLOKWANE – Cape Town City kept the pressure on the title contenders when they hammered basement club Baroka FC 3-0 in an Absa Premiership clash played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

City led 1-0 at halftime.

As it stands, SuperSport are top with 35 points, on a superior goal difference to second-placed City, followed by Wits and Kaizer Chiefs, both on 34 points, and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns with 32 points.

For City, it was a bit of a Lehlohonolo Majoro Show. The former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates striker arrived in the Mother City with a great reputation for scoring goals. He struggled, though, to justify that reputation.

City coach Eric Tinkler always believed Majoro would come good, and the forward did so spectacularly on Sunday.

He was on the score-sheet as early as the 13th minute. It was Aubrey Ngoma who set up the chance with a neat through-ball, and Majoro finished with aplomb.

In the second half, it was one-way traffic as City poured forward in attack. In the 51st minute, it was again Ngoma who fashioned the opening for Majoro.

The left wing left his marker for dead, drilled in the cross, and Majoro finished with a fine header. Baroka had no time to settle because, a minute later, they were 3-0 down.

This time it was Mozambican left back Edmilson who charged down the flank, whipped in the cross, and Sibusiso Masina rose high to head home.

It was a great result for City as they continue to be among the challengers when the title race comes down to the final stretch.

For Baroka, it’s not looking very good. They remain anchored to the bottom of the PSL log and, defensively, they are just all over the place.
