JOHANNESBURG - Kaizer Chiefs owe it to themselves and their fans to make sure that they produce some form of silverware going into the new season.

This is the view of Amakhosi’s centre-back, Lorenzo Gordinho who believes that he and his teammates have reached a point of understanding how coach Steve Komphela wants them to play in certain situations.

Implementing those instructions, in what is to be the 50-year old’s third and possibly final season with the club, will see Chiefs produce a trophy or two in the oncoming season, something the Glamour Boys have failed to do in their previous two campaigns.

“We’ve let ourselves, our supporters and the club down (by not winning a trophy recently),” Gordinho said. “But we are raring to go for it this time around. Our fans will always support us but having said that, there’s always that expectation of us winning trophies as a team. We need to start doing that, not for our fans only, but for ourselves and the club as well.

“We are at a point where we’ve reached an understanding of what coach Steve wants to implement,” Gordinho added.

“We now need to make sure that we start producing those results. I believe we are unstoppable, performance wise. We play the kind of football that everybody wants to watch. But I also believe that we really need to start imposing ourselves a bit more and dominate all our games going into the new season. I believe that it is those small details that will see us to winning some form of silverware in the new season.”

Gordinho, who didn’t have much of an off-season following his call-up into the Bafana squad that won the Cosafa Plate final a few weeks ago, said playing for the senior national team was truly an honour for him, and that it served as an opportunity for him to establish himself as an international player.

The towering 23-year-old from Benoni also added that given another chance to represent his country in more competitive matches, such as the Fifa World Cup and Afcon qualifiers, he would gladly grab the opportunity with both hands and play his heart out for the senior national team.

“I didn’t get much of an off-season,” Gordinho said. “But, to be honest with you, I didn’t need it really. I just love to play, I love being on the field and being involved in the game situations. I believe this off-season gave me a chance to work on myself and take my reputation to a higher level as a player.

“The call-up was a big thing for me. It meant that my performances at the club were consistent enough. I’d love to be a part of the setup that will feature in both Afcon and World Cup qualifiers (in the near future) though,” Gordinho added.

“It’s an achievable goal, I believe. I just have to keep on being consistent and continue working hard and I’ll reach it. It was one of my dreams to one day be called up into the Bafana squad and it happened for me. However, that was not my end goal. My end goal is to make sure that I become a consistent member of the squad. That’s what I want.”
