Cape Town - Cape Town City have announced that they will paint the Mother City pink when the PSL resumes on October 15, and it’s all for a worthy cause.

City takes on Baroka FC at Cape Town Stadium next Saturday (8.15pm kickoff) and the match has been dedicated their contribution to the fight against cancer.

October is breast cancer awareness month and City have joined with the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) to do their part in creating greater consciousness around the issue.

Cansa plays a leading role in cancer research and cancer-control policy development, as well as providing care, support and education to affected South Africans. Its purpose is to lead the fight against cancer in SA, with a mission of becoming the preferred non-profit organisation who educates the public and provides support to all people affected by cancer.

“It’s all about making the fight against cancer more visible,” City boss John Comitis said. “We are just happy to play our small part.”

City will take to the field in a limited-edition pink strip next weekend. Women will have free entry to the match, while pink bags and pink caps will also be handed out.

Comitis added: “Also, we are appealing to corporates to get behind the campaign in the fight against cancer by booking a suite at the Cape Town Stadium for the match. A suite costs R12 500, including catering, and 50 percent of the proceeds will go to Cansa.”

Established as a PSL club in June, City won their opening match against Polokwane City in August. They then beat Kaizer Chiefs in a MTN8 match, outplayed Orlando Pirates in Soweto and emerged victorious in the first-ever derby against Ajax Cape Town.

As things stand, City are in a lofty fourth position on the PSL log. Chiefs are at the summit with 10 points, followed by Golden Arrows, also on 10, and then Pirates, City and Polokwane, all on eight points.

City coach Eric Tinkler and his men have been hard at work for the Baroka clash. It's an encounter that would be rather low on the exposure scale, especially with the opposition from Polokwane being rookies in the PSL, but the cancer link now adds a lot more hype and anticipation to the fixture.

Tinkler’s squad will be aware of this but, as they have shown, they aren’t afraid of the big occasions. They certainly seem to have big-match temperament in spades. No doubt, City will be up for this one against Baroka come October 15 - even though they’ll have to do it in the pink.

Ajax will be also be in action next Saturday, when they are away to Chiefs in Durban (6pm kickoff).
