DURBAN - A Kaizer Chiefs side almost in full flight against rookies Highlands Park or Golden Arrows versus Free State Stars in what usually represents a mid-to-lower table battle.

It won’t be a tough choice for neutrals to decide between Saturday afternoon’s tie in KwaMashu or the evening skirmish involving Chiefs and relegation-threatened Highlands at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The scheduling of matches so close to each other, geographically and in terms of time, means clubs are effectively battling each other for the already dwindling support base the PSL enjoy.

Amakhosi are at least buzzing, which in itself is the core of their marketing drive. Everyone loves a winning team, especially if it is one of the Soweto giants.

While arch-rivals Orlando Pirates are sliding down the table, Chiefs head into this game searching for a fifth win on the spin.

With the likes of Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker, George Maluleka and Willard Katsande settling into a rhythm, coach Steve Komphela has less to explain while the action does the fancy-talking on the pitch.

Last week they did the business at Maritzburg United, and this week they will expect to shift up a gear against opponents winless in four outings and winless away from home.

It will be a tough home-coming for Durbanite Gordon Igesund, but the veteran coach relishes the battles against the big guns. He might have the perfect tactical battle plan to outfox any team on any day, but it will be up to his players to execute.

If striker Charlton Mashumba finds his range then Highlands could serve up the banana skin that they represent for title-chasing Chiefs.

For the Arrows die-hards, back-to-back home wins are on the cards. Arrows wiped away the nightmare of their 5-2 thrashing at SuperSport United and ended a seven-game winless run with a comfortable 2-1 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic last weekend.

And that, too, with 10 men for a fair chunk of the second half after Malawian striker Chiukepo Msowoya’s sending off.

Two more wins and Arrows should be safe from relegation, and well placed to secure a top eight finish. That’s how coach Clinton Larsen sees the situation.

Larsen reckons the players are in the perfect zone to push on and secure another home win.
