Mamelodi Sundowns and University of Pretoria played to a 1-1 draw in an Absa Premiership game at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night.

Richard Henyekane opened the scoring in the 51st minute before Bongani Zungu levelled 12 minutes later for the away side.

The derby started in typical derby fashion with both sides afraid to give anything away; as a result they were limited to long-range efforts.

Thokozani Sekotlong registered the first shot on target of the game in the 17th minute of the match. The forward found himself unmarked just outside the area, his resulting shot was easily dealt with by Wayne Sandilands.

The Brazilians had a good chance to take the lead on the half hour mark through Richard Henyekane. The forward found himself in acres of space inside the AmaTuks box but could only manage to drag his resulting shot wide of goal.

Wayne Arendse thought he had given his side the lead two minutes before the break. The Brazilians defender poked home after Washington Arubi spilled an Edward Manqele effort, but the official’s flag was raised.

Both sides started to find their rhythm as the half progressed but neither was able to find the back of the net and as a result the first stanza ended goalless.

Henyekane opened the scoring on the night six minutes after the break. Manqele’s misdirected effort on goal fell favourably for the striker and he made no mistake from close range to net only his second goal of the campaign.

AmaTuks pulled level in the 63rd minute of the match thanks to a Bongani Zungu strike from inside the area. Jabulani Shongwe’s failed clearance fell to the feet of the dynamic midfielder and he made no mistake to level matters.

Mpho Maruping went close for the away side 20 minutes later. The midfielder, who ran out for his first playing minutes of the year, shook his defender before unleashing an effort that went inches wide of Sandilands’ right-hand post.

Both sides pushed forward in search of the winner, but both defences held firm.

The result means that Sundowns stay in 11th while AmaTuks remain in ninth.
