JOHANNESBURG - Gordon Igesund hopes his side will be more vigilant at the back when they take on Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium this weekend.

This comes after Highlands Park failed to protect their lead against Polokwane City on Sunday, a result that could have seen them climb out of the relegation dogfight to the 12th position on the PSL standings with 17 points.

Igesund partly blamed the match officials for the 1-1 draw against Rise and Shine, arguing that some of the referee’s decisions were questionable.

“I’ll let you be the judge because I don’t want to talk about it,” Igesund said at first.

Then he let rip.

“They had 46 free-kicks and we had three. The referee said he was going to add five minutes (after the 90) and we got to play for about six and a half minutes. It was frustrating to lose out on a possible win.

“I would have loved to have won this encounter because I believe we deserved it. There were a whole lot of positives to take from this match, leading up to our next fixture, though.”

Some of the positives Igesund referred to was how his side defended throughout the game, until they conceded that last-minute goal.

Sipho Jembula struck a beauty that saw the sides walk away with a point each at the end of full-time.

Though the coach was disappointed with the result, the 60-year-old said this was a performance he hoped they could build on.

“We played in patches,” Igesund admitted. “Chiefs are a good side. I watched their last game (against Maritzburg United) and they were really good. It’s going to be tough.”
