Johanensburg - He’s been labelled a jinx and many other things he’d rather forget, but there’s nothing Teko Modise would change about his career. On tuesday night the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder can silence his critics when he faces SuperSport United.

By 9.30pm, Modise may no longer have to answer questions about how it feels not to have a league winners’ medal on display at home.

Sundowns are on the brink of title success, requiring a victory on Tuesday at Loftus (7.30pm) against Pretoria rivals SuperSport to clinch a long-awaited first league medal for Modise, who watched as his former clubs SuperSport and Orlando Pirates won league trophies after he left.

“I have been in unfortunate situations in my career. I remember playing for Pirates, we needed to score six goals on the final day against AmaZulu to win the league, but we couldn’t. It was painful knowing we were so close. But it’s something that I can’t control. I also can’t control what is going to happen when we play against SuperSport,” said Modise.

“I am grateful for the career I have had. I have done so much and I would not change anything. For me, it has never been about silencing the critics.

“We are going to play SuperSport and it’s one of those games where it’s going to be very emotional. You know what will happen if we can win and you know what will happen if we don’t. I will do the best and we will see what happens.”

Modise has reinvented himself this season and is as influential as ever at Sundowns - it would be fitting for him to lift the PSL trophy.

“Everybody is happy in the camp at the moment. We were labelled a team that spends, but don’t win anything.

“We just hope that whatever happens, whether or not we play well, we win the game.”
