He spent his years on the touchline, armed with a camera and captured some of the most captivating sports photographs.

Duif du Toit was a man for big occasions, a photographer par excellence.

South Africans paid tribute to the legendary lensman following his untimely death.

Du Toit, who had an illustrious career working for The Star, Touchline Media and recently Gallo Images, reportedly suffered from organ failure yesterday morning. As news of his death spread, he trended on Twitter.

Among those paying tribute was the Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula.

“Some of the best pictures that recorded our historical moments in the sporting fraternity were captured by Duif du Toit,” Mbalula said.

“His colleagues at Gallo Images know and respect him for his work ethic. It is for these reasons that a talented photographer like him was honoured in our sport awards.”

Former cricketer Mark Boucher tweeted: “A great friend to the Protea family, a legend and even a greater man! U will be missed.”

Springbok legend Bakkies Botha tweeted: “RIP a friend and one of the best sports photographers I knew. Blessings. Duif du Toit.” - The Star
