Johannesburg - International award-winning gospel group Joyous Celebration made its first outdoor recording on Saturday and achieved what many top soccer clubs have failed to do: attract a crowd of 20 000 spectators to Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The group presented a marathon show, commemorating 20 years of bringing gospel music to people across South Africa and the continent.
The line-up included other gospel talents, as well as poets, comedians and motivational speakers.
The programme, which began at 2pm, culminated in the Joyous 20 performance, recorded on CD and DVD. Segments were broadcast live on SABC1. The artists set the stage alight and kept fans on their feet.
Joyous co-founder Lindelani Mkhize said: “We are truly humbled by this milestone. We have become trendsetters and known for setting the bar higher with each album release.
“We have broken countless records, from best album sales to iTunes charts, and are grateful to God and our fans for this success.
“This milestone recording is an opportunity not only to celebrate these achievements, but to reach for new heights.”
Fellow founder Jabu Hlongwane said: “We had a shared vision for Joyous, which we established, nurtured and we watched it flourish together. We are honoured and extremely proud of what we created. This recording will remind our long-standing fans about where we come from.”
Joyous Celebration has also played a pivotal role in unearthing, grooming and showcasing African talent. The group has also launched the music careers of many talented artists.
