A farmworker was killed and 20 others were injured, five of them critically, when a truck transporting the group of workers collided with another truck outside Wellington last night.
EMS spokesman Robert Daniels said: “It was on the Haaskraal Road outside Wellington. One truck overturned.
“There were 15 people who were seriously injured and five who were critical. They were taken to Paarl Hospital.”
Paarl Hospital was placed on standby shortly after the accident was reported, said a medical practitioner who only gave his name as Dr Kruger. “It happened just after 8pm. One of the trucks lost control and swerved before it collided with the other truck.
“One person died. There were people lying all over the place. The truck was carrying workers from a Swartland farm,” said a Wellington police officer who did not want to give her name.
Police spokesman Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed what the police officer had said, and added that police were on the scene late last night.
The accident was the second in six weeks involving farmworkers transported on trucks.
On January 12, a worker was killed and several others injured when the truck transporting them to work collided with a car on the N7 near Melkbosstrand.
Thabisa Mjewulana, a mother of five children, died in that crash.
The 37-year-old from Crossroads was among a group of workers who were being transported from Bellville to work on a farm in the Citrusdal district.
