Rajput achieves a centenary

THE Natal Rajput Association celebrated its centenary on Saturday at the Rajput hall in Chatsworth.

In honour of the association’s 100 year existence, Dr Veena Parboo Rawjee and Professor Kalpana Shantilal Hiralal, launched a book entitled Tracing the Roots – The Natal Rajput Association 100 Year Anniversary 1911-2011.

Members of the association contributed articles towards the book and are aiming to make the book available at local libraries.

The guests of honour were Ela Gandhi and the Indian Consulate General, Anil Sharan.

Celebration co-ordinator Aroon Gordhan said the aim of this association was to promote education and culture and uplift the community.

He said over the years the association had embarked on charitable projects for the benefit of the community and had recently held a social responsibility programme in conjunction with Roshan Singh Promotions.

“Members of the Durban Association for the Aged (DAFTA) and the Aryan Benevolent Homes (ABH) were taken on a day’s outing and taken to the Rajput Hall where they were fed and given hampers.”

He also disclosed the association had recently undertaken renovations at the Rajput Hall with the hope of encouraging the public to use the hall more frequently.

Funds received from donors and the hiring of the hall goes towards projects like the renovation of the hall and its social responsibility programme.
