The excess of the new elite reached epic proportions when 4 000 people attended the pre-launch party of ZAR the club owned by ex con Kenny “Mr Sushi” Kunene. The party was held at Waterfront Studios after the J&B Met.

And one could have been forgiven for laughing at the bizarre proceedings of the night, the highlight being a short speech by Julius Malema who is a long time friend of Kunene. “Helen Zille wants the clubs to close at 2am,” he announced on stage.

“However ZAR in Cape Town will at close at 2am. If she comes here tonight we will show her how we have fun as ZAR is part of the ANC.”

The party which was held at Waterfront studio continued until 6am with the bar finally closing at around 3am.

Malema has been criticized before for his close association with ZAR and the excessive behaviour of its super rich cliental in Johannesburg. This includes Kunene infamously eating raw fish of the stomachs of semi-naked models.

Celebs scene enjoying themselves included Noleen Maholwana Sanqu, YFM twins Hlelo and Ntando Masina. Also in attendance were five of Kunene and his partner, Gayton McKenzie’s favourite sports car. This included a Lambourgini Gallardo, an Audi A8, an Aston Martin convertible and a Porche Cayenne

The two ex-cons put the cars on a pantechnikon and trucked them down from Johannesburg.

In synchronization, the five cars were turned on and their engines revved in unison. Obviously Kunene did his famous sushi trick off a blonde model while onlookers gawked at the so-called novelty.

ZAR will celebrate its official opening on Valentines Day in its new venue, The Cape Royale Hotel. Like its sister club in Johannesburg it will run daily from 11am until late. Kunene and McKenzie are also aiming for the exclusively rich as well as the lucrative Cape Town tourism market.
